ZEN in ooperation with the Robert F Kennedy Centre for Justice and Human Rights organised a round-table Discussion on Zimbabwe Diamonds following the Kimberley Process Plenary. (INVITATION)

A discussion with Farai Maguwu, an award-winning human rights activist and Director of the Zimbabwe Center for Natural Resource Governance Shamiso Mtisi, who coordinates civil society initiatives around Zimbabwe's notorious Marange diamond fields and is a lawyer at the Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association and Tor-Hugne Olsen.

Discussions focussed on how to avoid violence on the ground and if Zimbabwe could draw lessions from other countries in particular the neigbouring countries.

Discussion on Zimbabwe - EU relations and topical issues

ZEN together with Dutch member organisation ICCO hosted member organisations local representatives and the National Reference Group in a discussion on Zimbabwe - EU current issues. EU Delegation Head of Political, Press and Information Section Carl Skau presented on behalf of the EU. Discussions focussed on election and violence, constitutional process, Zimbabwe - EU country strategy paper and role of rest of the international community among other issues.

ZEN Hosts EU Ambassador at Civil Society Round Table

 

ZEN together with the European External Action Service hosted a round table for European and international civil society with the EU Ambassador Aldo Dell'Ariccia. The discussion was very lively and touched on main issues in Zimbabwe including constitutional stalemate, elections, health, harassment of human rights defenders in particular recent attacks on Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ) and their members, Save conservation area among others.

In cooperation with Danish member organisations MS Action Aid Denmark and Afrika Kontakt, and a main newsaper in Denmark "Politiken", a public meeting was held addressed by Zimbabwean civil society leaders and the Minister of Development Christian Friis Bach.

Friis Bach also addressed a closed meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held 1 June.

The prize winning movie "Mugabe-What Happened?"

In conncetion with the meetings of the committees of the Joint Parliamentary Assembly of the European Parliament and the parliaments of the African, Caribbean and Pacific countries ZEN organised a filmnight chaired by Judith Sargentini MEP (Greens-Netherlands) for the participants, which included 3 MPs from Zimbabwe and MPs from around the world. The film's Director Simon Bright presented the movie and answered questions after the film in a lively debate.

In February President Robert Mugabe turns 88 years old. Mugabe at 88 - What's Next for Zimbabwe?

On 21 February President Robert Mugabe turned 88 years old. Exploring the next steps for Zimbabwe, ZEN showed the documentary film "Robert Mugabe - What Happened?" a complex and compelling view of Zimbabwe the country and Mugabe the man. Commenting on the film was Mr. Sydney Chisi, Executive Director of YIDEZ - Youth Initiative for Democracy in Zimbabwe, who was visiting Brussels that day. He after the film discussed what European organisations and governments can do to address the long running crisis in Zimbabwe.

ZEN hosted a delegation of Zimbabwean civil society leaders, who visited five different European countries: Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Poland and Spain.

ZEN has since the signing of the Global Poltitical Agreement 15 September 2008 every September hosted a delegation to evaluate the compliance of the GPA. The delegation this year also focussed its advocacy on the role of diamonds in the developments in Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe's submission to the UPR.

Hear Us - film on violence against women in election campaigns in Zimbabwe.

Research and Advocacy Unit (RAU)'s Programmes Manager on Gender, Kudakwashe Chitseke, one of the film makers, joined us from Harare to lead the discussions.

Is Zimbabwe ready for elections? One aspect which is too little debated is the consequences of the gender specific violence in the run up to the 2008 elections. ZEN with the assistance of Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum brought the film Hear Us to Brussels to discuss these issues.

ZEN hosted a representative from the National Reference Group to give the main input to the Friends of Zimbabwe donor conference. Mr.Godwin Phiri, National Secretary NANGO delivered a speech on behalf of civil society.

The "Friends of Zimbabwe" donor group has met twice a year since 2003 to discuss the relationship to Zimbabwe. ZEN has since 2009 made recommendations to and provided speakers for their meetings. Find this rounds recommendations here.

ZEN received a delegation of Zimbabwean civil society leaders to Europe coming directly from the extraordinary SADC Summit on Zimbabwe in Johannesburg on 11-12 June.

The delegation shared their assessment of the current situation in Zimbabwe and in particular on the outcomes of the SADC Summit. The countries visited included UK, Norway, Netherlands and Belgium.

Consultation between Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development (ZimCODD) and European NGOs on what civil society in Zimbabwe is doing on the issues around debt; debt audit debt cancellation; as well as issues around the Multi Donor Trust Fund and potential for joint action.

The Zimbabwean Government and the international donors is discussing the increasing debt burden of Zimbabwe and how to deal with it, since the non payment of debt is seen as a major obstacle to re-engagement of the international community. Different options have been discussed including a HIPC for Zimbabwe. Zimbabwean civil society has taken a number of initiatives and proposed different proposals to the government and the donors. European civil society has been engaged around issues to do with debt in a number of countries. Could some of these experiences be strengthening the efforts by Zimbabwean civil society? Would there be some possibilities for cooperation around advocacy issues in connection with current initiatives? ZEN has brought the main NGO in Zimbabwe and some of the main European actors working on these issues to Brussel to exchanges views and experiences.

ZEN is organising a series of events focussing on the current state of the diamonds industry and their relation to the international watchdog, the Kimberley Process, including participating in the Kimberley Process Plenary Session in Jerusalem 1-4 November.

Zimbabwe has become the main focus of the diamonds watch dog, the Kimberley Process. ZEN has organised a lobbying trip for two civil society leaders from Zimbabwe to the Kimberley Process Plenary meeting in Jerusalem. These include the Local Focal Point coordinator in Zimbabwe, Mr. Shamiso Mtisi who was appointed by the Kimberley Process working group on monitoring 25 October 2010 and Sure Kasenye of the Centre of Research and Development.

Zimbabwean civil society leaders representing labour, church organisations, human rights organisations and other civil society organisations in Zimbabwe presented. The deputy minister of Foreign Affairs was part of the opening ceremony. The Norwegian Ambassador to Zimbabwe was also in attendance.

The role of the donors is important in Zimbabwe where the previous government blamed major donor countries for a lot of the ills of the country. After the inclusion of the former opposition MDC parites into the government, civil society is the main critical force in the country. ZEN invited the main donors to talk about their policy towards Zimbabwe presently and in the immidiate future. Main actors in the donor community, the head of the Fishmonger Group of donors, German Ambassador Albrecht Conze, and the host of the next meeting of the informal donor group "Friends of Zimbabwe", Norwegian Ambassador Gunnar Foreland spoke on behalf of the donors.

The Zimbabwe Europe Network hosted a meeting for Zimbabwean civil society organisations on the question of donor re-engagement with the government of Zimbabwe, restrictive measures and how ZEN can influence policy on Zimbabwe through its advocacy efforts in Europe. Speakers included the Head of Delegation of the EU in Zimbabwe as well as the Ambassador of the Netherlands.

ZEN hosted a conference for stakeholders interested in the development of Zimbabwe. The conference focused on the current state of affairs in Zimbabwe, the influence of IFIs and restrictive measures on economic recovery and the role donors can play in ending the political crisis in Zimbabwe.
